Capt William Grant served with the Prince of Wales Fencibles, which took a prominant part in the campaign against the French army of General Humbert which landed in Mayo in 1798.
Capt John Grant also served with the Prince of Wales Regt as adjutant.

This family appear to have come from Scotland to Northamptonshire. Arms "gules three crowns ancient or, fes dancette erm. Crest - mountain inflamed on summit cross or" belonged to Thos Grant who purchased Litchborough, Northants in 1743. Practically the same arms belong to the Grants of Glenlochy "Gules three crowns ancient or, chev erm engrailed. With same crest". In addition Patrick Kennedy 1816 shows an identical coat of arms for an Irish Grant family. One concludes that some of the Northants family joined the Northants Fencibles, a regiment closely involved with the Prince of Wales Fencibles, and ended up serving in Ireland where they married and settled.
