633 Eaglesham Carswell (O)
Source - United Presbyterian Church - Burgher.
Located in Montgomery Street, Eaglesham.
Began in 1767 as the result of a violent settlement in the Parish Church, although
it was not till
1788 that application for sermon was made to the Burgher Presbytery and the congregation
was
established officially - as Eaglesham Burgher Church, a church being built in
Coo Lane, Polnoon
Street in 1782. This was replaced in 1868 with a building in Montgomery Street,
erected during
the ministry (and to some extent through the generosity) of the second minister,
Mr William
Carswell. By this time the cause had become Eaglesham United Presbyterian Church,
to change
in 1900 to Eaglesham United Free Church.
Church built in 1868.

q v) 1901-02; Douglas Alexander George Muir 1913-19; John Edward Oldham 1920-28;
James Maxwell Dewar 1928-51; Douglas Cameron Alexander 1934-52; Ian Mackenzie
Forbes 1953-59.
Terminated on 20th September 1959 on uniting with Eaglesham Old as Eaglesham Old
and Carswell.
Now part of EAGLESHAM.

1. The ‘violent settlement’ referred to was when Thomas Clark was
presented by the patron, the
Earl of Eglinton, the call being signed by only one person, the head of a family.
