1915 Apr 16. Hugh Silvannus Pugh boarded the Hesperian in Liverpool bound for Canada. He is a collier and travels 3rd class to St Johns. It seems to be a significant date just 2 months before my mother, Jane Pugh, was born. Some months later on 4th September 1915 the Hesperian was torpedoed off Fastnet by the German submarine U.20, the same U-boat that sank the Lusitania. On 6th September she sank 130 miles west of Queenstown (Cobh) after unsuccessful attempts to tow her to port. There were 32 deaths. Hugh never married although the 1942 WW11 draft record in California shows a Sally Pugh living at the same address.
1917 Nov 11. Drafted into Canadian Army, but not enlisted until later as he did not arrive in the army until 125 days later. Absent without leave

1957 May 24. Arrives in UK Travels Cabin Class and his address is 489 Delored St, San Francisco
I understand that Evan Pugh was always annoyed when Hugh returned to the UK as he did from time to time and did not want the family to have anything to do with him. Not sure why.
