Robert Lloyd b1770 - 1859

Henry Clayton 1816

Robert Lloyd was born in Henllan, near Denbigh about 1770 ( I cannot find him in the Henllan records - there is a Robert Lloyd born in Henllan in these records on 11 May 1751 and the record states "supposed son of William & Mary Lloyd of Henllan).

From John Lloyd. According to the parish records for Henllan 1660-1812 there were 2 Robert Lloyd born circa 1770.

1809 Robert & Liz Hughes married in Henllan. We are not 100% sure which Robert this is! Because it would fit into our tree it is tempting to assume, but we need to get the parish records for Henllan 1812 onwards to nail this one down. Additionally, there is no mention of Bridget(or Brichard) in Henllan baptisms. Also no children were listed as born to Robert & Liz or baptised 1809-1812 in henllan. We are now beginning to wonder if any of the children were baptised at all, and indeed if Robert & Liz actually got married! We scoured the Llanycil (Bala) Parish records just in case,to see if any of the other siblings had been baptised Jonah,Gwen etc not one record to 1833! There is one other possibility,They may have been non conformist ie:welsh chapel, presbyterian, druid etc. Dolgellau where they have parish records for Llanycil from 1833 onwards.

Henllan Denbigh parish records show that he married Elizabeth Hughes in 1809. Robert is given as the son of Hugh & Gwen Lloyd, Eliz is the daughter of Evan & Eliz Hughes.Which explains the names of 2 of their children later. The witness was John Lloyd who may have been Roberts brother. Robert & Liz also had another son Peter 1815. We cannot trace any of above further back in Henllan, neither was there any records of Bridget or Hugh who were also born in Henllan we trawled back to 1612...nothing! There are further parish records 1833 thu 1841 et seq. but they are held in Dolgellau

They appear to have lived in Henllan for a few years in as much as his eldest child Bridget was born in Henllan. Their son, Hugh Lloyd, was born Denbigh 1814 (according to 1851 census, however1861 and 1871 state Bala). Henllan records show a son Peter born 1815 - he must have died as there are no further references to him in censuses.

Robert appears as a butcher in Bala in the 1841 census and lives there until his death probably in 1859. His son Hugh is also a butcher at Bala in 1841. Given Robert Lloyd is 70 years old in 1841, one presumes that he had probably retired, and the Hugh is running the business. A trawl of various Trade Directories for North Wales for years from 1829 to 1840, yields only these two men as Lloyd and "butcher"

From census information one can put together his family of Bridget 1811, Hugh 1814, Jane 1816, and Margaret 1821 (Jonah and Gwen, twins born 1826 are probably their children too, although Elizabeth would have been 46 at the time of their birth)

Robert and Elizabeth Lloyd certainly also seem to have been busy looking after their children and grandchildren.

In 1841 census they have Elizabeth Lloyd, age 3, and Jane Roberts age 2.

In 1851 there is Elizabeth Lloyd age 14, Elizabeth Roberts age 9 and Bridget Stedworth age 40

In 1861 Winifred Lloyd age 11

In 1871 Winifred Lloyd age 19

The 1841 census we get for this family at "Plase", Bala:- Robert Lloyd (butcher) 70, Elizabeth Lloyd 60, Jane Lloyd 25, Margaret Lloyd 20, Gwen Lloyd 15, Jonah Lloyd 15, Elizabeth Lloyd 3 (not born in Merionethshire), Jane Roberts 2. Jonah Lloyd and Gwen could be grand-children rather than children

In the 1851 census there is an Elizabeth Lloyd, born 1837 at Llangollen, Denbighshire, living with grandparents Robert Lloyd, butcher age 82 and Elizabeth Lloyd 71 at Plasau, Bala. Together with Bridget Stedworthy 40 (cited as daughter of Robert & Elizabeth Lloyd, born Henllan) and Elizabeth Roberts 9 (cited as granddaughter of Robert & Elizabeth Lloyd). Robert Lloyd 1770 is given as born in Henllan, Denbeighshire. And his wife born in Llanfor (writtten Llanfawr now), Merionethshire (Llanfor is about 1 mile east of Bala)

Robert Lloyd dies between 1851 and 1861. This is probably Robert Lloyd died at Bala Jan/Mar 1859 vol 11b 299

From John Lloyd on Ancestry "We have just visited the grave of Robert & Elizabeth in Christ Church Bala. The dates on the graves are: Robert 1770-1885 Eliz 1779-1879. Their son Jonah was buried alongside 1826-1881. " This would confirm the death of Elizabeth Lloyd. The writer is presumably wrong with the date of Robert's death as 1885, I would assume it is a mistranscription for 1855.

And the 1861 census gives just Elizabeth Lloyd, 83, butchers widow, living at Bala with just Winifred Lloyd, age 11, a granddaughter born in Birkenhead. Births Sep 1850 Winifred Lloyd at Liverpool 20 493.

1871 census gives Elizabeth Lloyd, 89, butchers widow, living at Bala with just Winifred Lloyd, age 19, a granddaughter born in Liverpool. The statement that Winifred was the grand-daughter of Robert and Eizabeth, is presumably correct. Winifred is born 1850, Elizabeth in 1837 and Bridget in 1811 (with Bridget's siblings being born through to 1825). One would doubt that Elizabeth, b1837 was the mother of Bridget b1850
