Ann Pugh born 1820

Anne Pugh. Christening: 29 March 1820 at Llanfachreth, Merioneth, Wales (dau of Richard Pugh who is a farmer living at Buchesau, Llanfachreth, and Ann). She goes to Bala as a servant, and marries a William Jones there in 1852. Along with Richard Pugh (b1788) and the rest of his family, she is ellusive when one tries to trace her in 1841.

1841 census. There are a number of alternatives

1851 census is certainly this Ann Pugh, chambermaid working in a Bala hotel. Age 29 born Llanfachraeth. She marries 2 years later (see below). The daughter of Richard Pugh, labourer, and witnessed by Margaret Pugh.

1852 Ann Pugh marries William Jones of Bala. Dec 1852 Bala 11b 723 Ann Pugh to William Jones

1861 census. Living at Bala. Anne Jones age 38, b Llanfachreth, joiner's wife

1871 census living at Llanycil (Bala), Ann Jones age 49, born Llanfachreth Note Nephew Hugh Pugh b1865 in Dolgelly

The Hugh Pugh should be a child of one of her brothers, providing that it is not illegitimate. The possible births are

Births Dec 1865 Hugh Pugh, Dolgelly 11b 404 son of Howell Pugh & Ann Roberts, so not him
Births Mar 1866 Hugh Pugh, Dolgelly 11b 447 son of Rowland Pugh & Catherine Jones, could be if William Jones had a sister Catherine, who happened to marry a Rowland Pugh
Births Mar 1866 Hugh Pugh, Dolgelly 11b 442

I have not been able to identify him positively in the following census (1881). There is one Hugh Pughe son of Edward & Ann Pughe in Dolgellau (not him as in 1871 census too), and another son of Howell & Anne Pughe (not him as in 1871 census there too). Both Hughs are 16 and were born in Dolgellau. There is a Hugh Pugh son of Rowlant Pugh living at Llanelltyd in 188, not him as a Hugh is living there in 1871. He could have died by 1881, or could be living under another name if his mother eventually married.

The most likely explanation is that this Hugh Pugh is an illegitimate son of a sister of Ann Jones. I doubt that he belongs to Ann's sister Jane Pugh, as she married in 1849. And at the moment I have no other sisters for her.

1881 census living at Llanycil, Bala. Anne Jones age 60, born Llanfachreth. Note Elizabeth Pugh, age 21 (b1860), visitor, farmers daughter, born Llanfachreth

Elizabeth Pugh is presumably another daughter of one of her brothers or sisters. The only possible birth that I can get is:- Births Jun 1859 PUGH Elizabeth Dolgelly 11b 465 daughter of Rees Pugh & Margaret Williams . This is certainly the daughter of Rees & Margaret Pugh at Tyn y cornel. Now the story would be a perfect fit if Rees Pugh's father had been Richard Pugh b1788. This would make Ann Pugh (b1820, and the subject of this page) Ree's sister. However I have established on the page on Rees Pugh & Margaret Williams, that Ree's father was a Rees, not a Richard.

1891 census

The 1891 census yields neither Anne Jones or her husband, so I assume that they are dead, hovever there may be an angle on Hugh & Elizabth who have featured in their household. The I891 census for Lllanfachreth gives a Hugh and Eizabeth of the right ages living with their parents Hugh (age 75) & Elizabeth in Llanfachreth.

which is the same family as this in 1881census in llanfachreth

and the same as this one in 1871, which shows Hugh Pugh in the household at that time, so could not have been the Hugh Pugh, nephew in the 1871 census in Jones house in Bala.
